The country of Sri Lanka is grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. The storm triggered massive floods and landslides, impacting 1.46 million people across 25 districts. At least 410 people have lost their lives, and more than 300 people remain missing. Thousands of families have lost their homes, and more than 200,000 people are now sheltering in temporary centers.
Nazarene churches in Sri Lanka are responding to support their communities even as they themselves suffer loss. At least one Nazarene church building was completely destroyed. Widespread damage to power and communication lines has made it difficult thus far to fully assess needs across all churches.
Local congregations are providing food and hygiene packages to 2,000 families in 17 communities, including children and families connected to two Child Development Centers. Immediate concerns include food for displaced families, the prevention of communicable diseases, and continued rescue operations in areas still cut off by flooding and landslides.
